Pending the outcome of the official investigation into the cause of the fire that razed the old Commission on Elections (COMELEC) building, the poll body appealed to its detractors to “stop spreading unfounded rumors and baseless conspiracy theories.”
COMELEC Spokesman James Jimenez explained that ”the constant barrage of scary scenarios serves only to undermine public confidence in the COMELEC and condition the minds of the public that cheating will occur.”
”We appeal to the electorate not be be swayed by rumor mongers who are out to sow confusion and chaos at this critical point of the eloection period. We have said it before and we are saying it again, the fire of March 11, 2007 will not stop the elections in May from happening ” said Jimenez. ####
