  1. PRESS RELEASE

BABAE KA CALLS ON COMELEC TO DEFER PROCLAMATION OF AKBAYAN, GABRIELA AND ANAKPAWIS

MANILA. – WOMEN’S partylist group Babae para sa Kaunlaran (BABAE KA) has called on the Commission on Election (COMELEC) to defer the proclamation of Akbayan, Gabriela and Anakpawis until after the resolution of the investigations which could result to the disqualification of the said groups.

“We have filed a disqualification case against Akbayan for receiving foreign funds while a motu propio investigation of Gabriela and Anakpawis has been requested for violation of certain provisions of the partylist law. These are serious matters that should be addressed immediately by the COMELEC,” said Ruth Vasquez, president of BABAE KA.

The group alleged that Akbayan has received funding from the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, a foundation of German leftwing social democrats with an office in the country. It also alleged that Gabriela and Anakpawis are members of partylist Bayan Muna coalition and thus must be disqualified for violating the maximum 3 seats rule of the partylist system.

Under the law, a partylist organization may be disqualified if proven that it received funding from foreign governments or foundations. Also, a partylist that gather 6% or more of the total number of votes cast on the partylist system shall have the maximum 3 seats in congress.

“The Friedrich Ebert Stiftung is the benefactor of Akbayan and its allied organizations including the Akbayan Youth. Akbayan has directly and indirectly benefited from the funding and logistical support of this German foundation. It has directly and indirectly aided the electoral activities of Akbayan,” Vasquez stressed.

She added that, “Gabriela and Anakpawis are members of the Bayan Muna and Bayan coalition. In fact, the representatives of these groups – Liza Maza of Gabriela and Crispin Beltran of Anakpawis – were the number 2 and 3 nominee-representatives of Bayan Muna in the House of Representatives from 2001 to 2004. The registrations of both organizations circumvented the law and violated the maximum 3 seats rule.”#

  2. MAGUINDANAO AND LANAO DEL SUR

The current batch of Comelec officials are again entangled in a dilemma of counting “controversial poll results” from 2 provinces known as hotbeds of electoral cheatings in the country- Maguindanao and Lanao del Sur. The current Comelec officials were not able to help the legislature in formulating electoral reforms that could have ensured honest and clean elections for the Filipino people. That batch of Comelec officials also failed to bring into proper closure the issue of the “Hello-Garci Controversy”. If only such batch of officials at this period of time ordered the “opening” of the ballot boxes from the Maguindanao and Lanao del Sur areas for the 2004 Philippine presidential election, such would had helped in settling the political dispute that arose from the Hello-Garci Controversy. Sometimes it’s tempting to say that the current Comelec officials must resign simultaneously, that is right after the proclamation of the winners among the senatorial aspirants of the May 14, 2007 elections in the Philippines. But I don’t think that such officials will do such an action. The best thing that the “Team Abalos” can do right now is to properly investigate the obvious poll-cheating mechanisms that have flourished in both Maguindanao and Lanao del Sur provinces for the past years. The Team Abalos can also suggest that the next set of Comelec officials should be selected by the Supreme Court justices, in order to ensure that Comelec would be headed by neutral people. Mr. Abalos is known to be a LAKAS-NUCD member. The future commissioners of the Comelec should not be active members of the established political parties in the Philippines. Team Abalos can make a graceful exit from the Comelec officialdom, if it can properly investigate the election-cheating machineries in Maguindanao and Lanao del Sur, then, after the conclusive investigation, bring the sponsors of election-terrorism in the Philippines to justice, to stand for a fair trial under the legal system of this country. The so-called 12-0 victory of Team Unity over the Genuine Opposition in the insurgency-infested province of Maguindanao is statistically improbable and impossible. It is obviously a product of a cheat-mechanism. The Team Abalos at the Comelec should help the Filipino people in legally abrogating the electoral-cheating machineries that had been and are still being operated by election-terrorists in the Philippines.

  3. Our Gratitude

The Babae para sa Kaunlaran (BABAE KA) women’s party-list would like to express our gratitude to those who supported, campaigned and voted for the organization, as well as to those who in one way or another sympathized with us during the most trying times of the campaign.

We could say that it is a campaign filled with unexpected challenges. From the start we knew that it would be difficult for us to gather the number of votes needed for a partylist to achieve its electoral objective especially given our meager resources compared to other groups. But still we persist. We dared to campaign in the hope that it will be a principled one — a campaign based on programs and platforms and not on the number of posters, streamers and media advertisements.

However, we find out that it is more than that.

During the party-list campaign, mudslinging and black propaganda prevailed perpetrated by those party-list groups in power. We never expected those leftist organizations to result to dirty tricks, lies, deceit and harassment but they did.

The results of the party-list election and the ongoing drama wherein various organizations have been accused of vote padding are proofs that all the so-called charges against BABAE KA are fabricated by those with malicious and self-serving motives. BABAE KA has been vindicated.

On the other hand, our issues against these organizations are true and would be proven, if the COMELEC will not give in to pressures from these leftists.

To date, BABAE KA officers are still being harassed thru text messages. But as what we have stated, BABAE KA will never be cowed by the bullying tactics of these leftist organizations.

The experience in 2007 party-list election will serve as a valuable lesson for BABAE KA. We shall come back stronger, better and much more prepared in 2010.

    Again, thanks to all.

Mabuhay ang Kababaihan! Mabuhay ang Sambayanan at Pamilyang Pilipino!

    Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!

  4. to BABAE KA:

You should respect the result of the party list elections. If ever Anakpawis, Bayan Muna and Gabriela each garnered more than 2% of the votes cast for party list entitle them to seats in the Congress. You should please take notice that there is no one in this world that could claim to have the monopoly of rendering public service. If they are indeed leftist organizations, we should respect that because the Law allows them to participate in partisan politics. Even the CCP is allowed to participate in the elections. The law that bans the communist party has long been repealed. I hope it clarifies this issue.

  8. The current COMELEC officialdom has to be praised for standing firm on its position to hold a special election at Magindanao province. That is the only way to clean the obvious poll irregularities that took place at Maguindanao during the May 14, 2007 elections in the Philippines. Mr. Koko Pimentel should just allow the people of Magindanao to make their general will become known to our nation. What if Koko Pimentel gets defeated at Maguindanao? So what? The important thing is to cleanse the province of Magindanao from the poll irregularities that took place there during the mid-year elections in this country. The important thing is to know what was the “true expression” of the people of Maguindanao during the May 14, 2007 elections in the Philippines. Besides, if a special election will push through in Maguindanao this month, Koko Pimentel has still a chance to make a “last-day election campaign” at Magindanao if he will request it at the COMELEC.
