COMELEC tightens security
Following the brutal killing recently of Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Law Department Director Atty. Alioden Dalaig Saturday night, the poll body deemed it necessary to enforce stricter security measures starting today, November 13, 2007.
COMELEC Commissioner Florentino A. Tuason said “it is imperative that we take precautionary measures to secure the safety of our personnel, officials and Commissioners of the COMELEC.”
He added that apart from the Dalaig murder, the measures are of utmost urgency considering the ‘intense and volatile’ political situation brought about by the recent Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan polls and the heavy influx of outsiders ‘of different persuasions and/or agenda’ wanting to transact official business with the Commission, which he said, could be a potential threat to its in-house security and safety if uncontrolled.
Comm. Tuason said the security measures will be enforced ‘as long as it takes’.
Tuason is currently the Acting Chairman following the absence of Comm. Resurreccion Borra who is on official business abroad. He declared starting today the No. ID, No Entry Policy will strictly be enforced inside the COMELEC premises to readily distinguish insiders from outsiders. “We are now restricting the entry of visitors or guests who have no official transaction in the COMELEC” he said.
Tuason also stated that the COMELEC has asked for more police presence in their office. On top of the 34 PNP officers assigned in the COMELEC, he said they are formally asking for an additional 15. ###
